HENLEY SWIM, the open water swimming events specialists release their summer programme and reveal an expanded fixture list for the 2015 season.

Henley Swim deliver a range of exciting and challenging Open Water Swimming Events catering for the requirements of experienced swimmers and enthusiasts alike.

Event co-founder Jeremy Laming said: “We are hugely proud of all of the Henley Swim events. We started with the Henley Classic back in 2004, which at first was quite simply an incredibly enjoyable experiment. It’s growing popularity convinced us that we weren’t the only people to like this kind of thing and we now have four main swims that are firmly fixed as the must-do events in the open water swimming calendar. It is slightly surreal but also a source of great pride.”

HENLEY CLASSIC Sunday June 28th (inc Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity Match)
Sponsored by brand new open water swimming brand Selkie Swim Co the Henley Classic is a 2.1km endurance swim upstream along the Henley Royal Regatta course, one of the most famous and beautiful stretches of water in the world. This race is a celebration of summer, with an atmospheric start time of 4.30am swimmers arrive in darkness and are then guided by a torchbearer to the start and into the sunrise.

2015 sees defending champions Alexander Studzinski and Beatrix Eisel competing in Germany leaving the field wide open for new champions to get their names engraved on the coveted Inman and Ovey cups. For casual swimmers, the “sporting” waves offer an experience for those who just enjoy swimming in picturesque surroundings. 

OXFORD vs CAMBRIDGE Varsity Match

Back by popular demand this varsity match enters it’s second year with Oxford determined to defend their title. The two famous universities go head to head pitching their four best men and women against each other with the three fastest to cross the line lifting the trophy. 

HENLEY MILE Sunday July 12th

Entering it’s fourth year, the Henley Mile is a straight line downstream swim held over the boomed Henley Royal Regatta course. This day long event has the broadest appeal, perfect for both elite swimmers and swim enthusiasts, including children, keen to tackle their first open water swim.

2015 sees a partnership with the worlds largest open water swim, the Midmar Mile. Winners from this event will compete in the Henley Mile guaranteeing a world class field.

Incorporating the H2Open magazine Open Water Show swimmers can expect seminars from some of the stars of open water swimming, the latest kit, and opportunities to learn about everything from swimming techniques to nutrition.

The hugely popular Suits vs Skins contest returns for 2015. Testing the performance boost afforded by a wetsuit; entrants swim the course twice, once with a wetsuit, once without and the swimmer with the fastest combined time is crowned winner.

CLUB TO PUB Saturday July 25th

The latest addition to the event list, the Club to Pub is a social evening swim that starts at Henley Rowing Club and finishes at the historic Angel on the Bridge Pub. The swim’s challenge is to complete the 1.5km distance within the hour before the chiming of the clock tower bells. Colours are awarded to all finishers along with a specially brewed bottle of Brakspear 2 Bells and a medal that doubles as a bottle opener. All swimmers are invited to a celebratory BBQ at the Angel on the Bridge Pub.

BRIDGE TO BRIDGE Sunday August 9th

Sponsored by new open water swimming brand Selkie Swim Co this event is also known as the Thames Marathon. A non-competitive 14km endurance challenge swum in the style of a ‘cyclo-sportive’ the Bridge to Bridge is fast developing a reputation as one of the toughest mass participation swimming trials around. 2014 saw a record number of participants and this year is promising to attract even more.
