Landform Consultants founder and managing director, Mark Gregory, and lead designer, Catherine MacDonald have both struck gold at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018 with Mark further scooping the Best Construction Award.
This year is the 30th consecutive year at Chelsea for Mark who has designed the Welcome to Yorkshire garden. Affectionately known as the ‘Construction King of Chelsea’, Mark was also awarded the highly coveted Best Construction award. He has now built 98 Chelsea show gardens and spent nearly four years of his life on the grounds of Royal Hospital and is delighted to have returned as a designer after winning gold for his Children’s Society garden in 2010.
Mark started Landform on April 1, 1989 and the next day was called on to create a last minute Chelsea garden and he’s been back every single year since. Landform holds more than 20 gold medals and this new honour is Mark’s fifth personal gold.
He said: “What a year it’s been! A Gold medal and Best Construction Award means everything. It’s not just a win for me but also for the place I’m so privileged to call home. This moment, in my 30th year at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, is very much a dream come true – I couldn’t be any happier. It was also an absolute honour to meet Her Royal Highness the Queen last night and it was fantastic to hear that she was enchanted by the garden and she made some beautiful comments.”
The evocative and aromatic garden captures the sights, smells and tastes of the world-renowned Yorkshire Dales. It has its own woodland area, drystone walls, flower-filled meadows, lush pastures, a cultivated cottage-style garden filled with flowers and vegetables around a bothy and a tumbling beck with dramatic fast flowing water.
Catherine MacDonald returned with a second Seedlip Garden, after securing her first RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal last year.
She first started working with Mark in 2010 when she helped on the planting for his last gold medal winning garden for the Children’s Society.
Catherine said: “We work brilliantly together, Mark believed in me and gave me the opportunity to develop my own skills, take on show gardens and grow the Landform design team. He trusted me which gave me the confidence to push myself.
“I’m delighted to receive my second gold medal. We’ve had so much fun putting this garden together. It’s been the perfect opportunity to blend my scientific background with my design skills. Seedlip founder Ben Branson and his team are an incredibly passionate and inspirational group of people and it’s been absolutely fantastic to work with them again. There’s been so much creativity and energy in the project I’m really pleased it’s come across for the the judges to appreciate.”
The Seedlip Garden, in the new category, A Space to Grow, is a conceptual garden that champions the garden pea and shines a spotlight on the pea family, Fabaceae.
This is a first as no other show garden has only used species from the same family of plants before. Her garden features a path of circular elements representing the form of the pea which lead to the elevated ‘Peavilion’ – a shrine housing a collection of articles all about the humble pea.
